At Westmoor Primary School we have designed our curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils in order to ensure excellent progress, high standards and enjoyment. Each year group follows a half termly theme from the Ancient Greeks to Outer Space. We pride ourselves on high quality teaching of reading, writing and grammar to enable all children to reach their potential. We have designed a maths curriculum which ensures that children have a sound understanding of the basic building blocks for maths and the opportunity to deepen their understanding. We are a well resourced school and children use technology to further their learning.
All members of staff strive to create a friendly, caring and supportive atmosphere where all children feel safe and secure. While planning, Year teams share the preparation of lessons, drawing on different experiences, knowledge and expertise to ensure learning is relevant and well matched to meet the needs of the children. Support staff including Educational Teaching Assistants (ETAs), bilingual support assistants and behavior support assistants are passionate about helping to ensure that all children can fully access learning.
We follow the 'letters and sounds' scheme when teaching phonics. Alongside this we use the songbirds phonics books, Oxford Reading Tree resources and other banded books.
School leaders regularly monitor planning, observe teaching and check children's progress towards their expectations. This ensures that all children make consistently good progress.
