Summer 2nd half term overview
Here you can find out all about what we are learning about this half term!
This half term we are continuing with our
'Big Wide World' topic and then moving onto exploring 'Sunshine and Sunflowers'
In the Big Wide World topic, we are going to be exploring habitats under the sea, starting with our visit to the Sea Life Centre in Manchester!
(Thursday 9th June)
Through our visit we will learn about different sea creatures and gain an understanding of how we can look after our seas and beaches and protect precious living things. We will write recounts of our trip and create some sea creature inspired art using materials that are often found in our oceans and which are harmful.
In the Sunshine and Sunflowers we will explore our local environment and see how it has changed throughout the year. We will grow flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden area. We will learn how to care for plants and animals, identifying some different types. We also will take part in outdoor learning activities and find out how to stay safe in the sun.
How can you help at home?
- Grow some quick growing plants together, such as salad leaves, radishes or cress.
- Plan and go on a picnic.
- Go on a local walk and talk about the changes that have happened to living things throughout the year.
- Take a bag and collect litter to help improve your local area.

Morning Routines for Reception
Reception children now choose their lunch on the IPad through the Meal Selector App.
Every morning children now have an input with their key worker so please encourage children to register and go to the carpet area.
During the morning will learn phonics in small groups. It is very important that this learning is followed up with regular reading at home and opportunities to recognise letters and practise blending the sounds in words.
Children will continue to access the continuous indoor and outdoor provision and take part in adult led activities to develop their skills in all areas.
Some children in Nursery and all Reception children will start to think about moving on to their next class during the half term. Activities have been planned to support children with this transition;
- Story time with the new teacher
- See the new classroom
- Craft activity with the new class
- Welcome to Reception Talk and Tour on Thursday June 16th at 5pm - 6pm
- Common transition day on Tuesday 5th July
More information will follow on the Welcome Talk and Tour for parents of children moving into Reception and the common transition day, so please check your school pings.
We have launched a new reading scheme called Rocket Phonics. It allows children to read online books matched to their phonic ability. All children in Reception have a login and should have received a letter with their login details. Please help your child to log on and read the books that have been allocated by the class teacher.
Our Stay and Play sessions will continue to run every alternate Friday at 10:30am and 2:00pm. Activities will be set up in the spare classroom so that parents and children can have some space and time together to play and learn. Refreshments will be served and parents will have opportunity to look at children's work books and chat to staff.
⭐️ Please can your child bring book bags to school every day so that we can change your child's reading book and library book when needed.
⭐️ In our Early Years Curriculum we learn outdoors rain or shine. Therefore, please can your child bring a spare change of clothes in a bag that they can keep on their peg.
⭐️ If you would like to keep up to date with events upcoming in school, please download the Ping app on your mobile device so you can receive the weekly newsletter. If you need support with this please speak to a member of the EY team who are happy to help.
Name writing ✏️
It is really important that you help support your child to recognise their own name and be independent at writing their own name. This helps your child to become independent when choosing their lunch, self register and write their name on their own work.
Here are some fun ideas to help support your child!
Tapestry Online Learning Journal
At Westmoor we compile children's learning in the Early Years via an online learning journey app called Tapestry. Please see click on the link for more information.
Parents who are new to school will receive an email with a link to activate their account in the week beginning 20th September. Sometimes this email can go to your junk or spam box so please check them too.
If you have any problems activating your account, please speak to your child's key worker.
