Physical Education Curriculum Overview

This document details how we organise the skills, knowledge and vocabulary that is taught in PE across the school in each year group.

PE Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Intent

Through our P.E Curriculum all pupils will individually succeed and excel at physical activities.

We will enable pupils to improve their skills and become equipped to lead healthy, happy lives and we will promote lifelong participation in physical activity.  Through our PE Curriculum we will also promote the values of fairness, respect, determination, resilience, cooperation and collaboration.

Curriculum Implementation

At Westmoor Primary, our PE curriculum is varied and long-term plans ensure that we meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. All pupils receive at least two hours of high-quality PE using the vast outside space, sports hall or school hall.  During these lessons, children learn fundamental skills through a variety of activities and games suitable to their key stage. We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.

Our PE curriculum is sequenced precisely to ensure progression of knowledge and skills throughout a child’s primary education, thus enabling children to build upon prior experiences and apply these fluently, with confidence. Children also have the opportunity to further these skills at school sports clubs and various sporting events helping to make local community links. We recognise that playtimes are an important part of our pupils being happy, healthy and ready to learn so we also have OPAL play times which also encourage more physical activity through play.

At Westmoor Primary we endeavour to provide a broad range of activities based on children’s interests and new initiatives. Children take part in a range of invasion, striking and fielding, net or wall games, we promote imagination and creativity through sports in gymnastics and dance as well as providing opportunities for athletics using both indoor and outdoor environments plus outdoor and adventurous activities. In KS2, children go on a residential course for outdoor activities. Children have swimming lessons in Year 5.

Impact Statement

To fulfil our vision by inspiring the next generation to have a lifelong love and participation in physical activity. At Westmoor we motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun for all. We inspire children to use the skills and knowledge they enquire during PE throughout other areas of the curriculum and throughout their lives. We want children to learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness and encourage competitive sport as well as developing a love for physical activity leading to a happy and healthy lifestyle.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Schools can be graded as Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

Since 2015, we have applied each year and successfully been graded as Bronze in 2015/16 and Silver every year since then.
