Reminders
PE Day - MONDAY

Please ensure that your child brings a complete PE kit to school every Monday to allow them to participate in PE lessons. Kit is as follows:

- A white t-shirt or polo shirt (This MUST be different to the child’s school t-shirt).

- Plain black shorts/leggings/jogging bottoms

- Plain blue jumpers or hoodies are acceptable if weather is cold.

- Indoor shoes/pumps (for indoor activities). Outdoor trainers (must not be school shoes).

General Points about PE:

- All long hair must be tied up.

- Earrings and watches must be removed.

- Children must bring a doctor’s note if they are unable to participate in PE.

Library Day - Friday
Year 1 will visit the school library every Friday. Please ensure that children bring their home reading books in to change on this day. If they've already finished a book they can return it straight away and we will change it as soon as possible. Don't forget to write in their reading records whenever they read at home - we love seeing their progress!

Spellings - Monday
Children will be tested on their spellings every Monday morning and new spellings will be sent via Class Dojo on a Monday afternoon.

What are we learning this term?
Take a look at the overview below to find out more about what we're up to this term!

2026 Year 1 Phonics Screening Test

During the week beginning 8th June, children in Year 1 will sit the Phonics Screening Check. The Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment in England designed to confirm whether children have learned the phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It measures their ability to blend sounds to read 40 words (real and "alien" words), ensuring they can decode effectively, not just memorise words.

We will hold a parent meeting early in the summer term to provide more information on the Screening Check and how you can help your child at home. In the meantime, please see the lists of practise words that children can work through. Remember - little and often is the most effective approach. Just 5 - 10 minutes each day will have a positive effect on children's decoding skills.

Top tip - Please encourage your child to say the sounds before blending and look out for words that contain the split digraphs: a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e,  as the 'e' at the end of the word means that the word is pronounced with a long vowel sound.
