The Big Ambition

The Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has launched The Big Ambition, a national survey of children and young people across England.

The Big Ambition aims to hear from children across England on what they think is important! In the lead up to the next General Election, the Children’s Commissioner wants to take children’s thoughts, opinions and ideas to decision-makers, to make sure that the Government hears young people’s voices on what they think needs to be done to make children’s lives better in England.

The Big Ambition survey will be open until Friday 15th December.

Local Poet Visit

Matt Abbot, a local published poet came in school to run a couple of different workshops.

During the morning, he worked with each of the Y6 classes where he shared a couple of his own poems and then explored some ways to get the ideas flowing for the children as they write their poems. These included thinking about the senses and completing the sentence ‘there’s no such thing as…’ In the afternoon, he worked with the Y4 classes and thought about how to write about their heroes including make a recipe of ingredients and item from the kitchen that typifies that person.

Dewsbury Mayor Visit

It was a pleasure to welcome the Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Cahal Burke to school today to meet our school council.

He spoke with the children about his role and what the council does. He also gave some fantastic advice on how to run our school council. The Mayor praised the keenness of our councillors to get involved in democracy and invited the children to join him, at Huddersfield Town Hall, in the New Year for a guided tour.

Thank you for visiting Mr Mayor!

Rebecca Adlington Visit

Librarian visit

We have had a visit from our local librarian who has shown our children how to access the library. Our Year 2 children have been lucky to have a trip to Dewsbury library and have all signed up for a library card. It was very exciting to hear about all the different things that Kirklees library offers including yoga, Lego clubs alongside offering books, e-books, audio books and comics on loan to members.

Librarian visit

Inspiring the next generation!

We have been looking at different jobs in our community. We have had a visit from a dental nurse who was interviewed by the children in Year 3. Some of our children have now expressed ambitions to work in health care when they grow up.

Our children's questions were sent to a range of people in the local community who kindly sent us video responses. The children have really enjoyed learning about a range of jobs which local people do.
